DOT Drug and Alcohol Training Requirements
You must meet specific DOT drug and alcohol training requirements necessary to become a drug or alcohol testing professional.
- You must demonstrate proficiency in the DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations as found in 49 CFR, Part 40 Regulations.
- Breath alcohol training (BAT) and screening test technician training (STT) is device specific. Therefore, you must receive training on the DOT-approved device you are using to conduct tests. You must also demonstrate proficiency in the use of the device.
- If you are training to become a specimen collector using oral fluid, you must train on the DOT-approved oral fluid collection device you plan to use
- You must be able to successfully perform a series of error-free mock tests. These mock tests simulate real tests, covering various testing scenarios, proper documentation, and instructions.
- You must complete refresher training every five years.
- If a fatal flaw leads to the cancellation of a test, you must undergo Error Correction training.
