The Q.E.D. Saliva Alcohol Test is the premier disposable alcohol test. No other disposable device comes close to the accuracy which the Q.E.D. achieves. Other disposable breath and saliva devices either detect the presence of alcohol at a given level or give estimates of alcohol level.
The Q.E.D., on the other hand, duplicates quantitative results obtained with blood alcohol tests, the gold standard of alcohol testing. The correlation of Q.E.D. results to blood alcohol results is .98 (1.00 is perfect correlation).
Agencies that wish to certify their operators on the Q.E.D. can do so using the Q.E.D. Screening Test Technician training package. This NHTSA approved course allows agencies to train in-house. A video demonstrates techniques for proper use of the kit, and workbooks guide the instructor and participants through the course.
The Q.E.D. also offers an alternative to users who need highly accurate quantitative results, but might do only a handful of tests a year. The small number of tests may not justify the investment in top-of-line evidential breath alcohol testing instruments and the related calibration supplies. Because the Q.E.D. is available in any quantity, it fits any size program.
To use the test, the subject collects saliva from their mouth with the swab provided in the kit. The swab is then placed into the Q.E.D. device. Capillary action draws the saliva through the device. Any alcohol in the saliva creates a column of vivid reddish-purple color. The test is read exactly like a thermometer using the large, clearly marked percent scale.
