Is training required to be a Breath Alcohol Technician (BAT) and/or urine specimen collector?
Yes. BATs and collectors must successfully complete a training course before they perform alcohol testing and urine drug collections required under DOT regulations.
How often must BATs and Collectors be re-trained?
BATs and Collectors must be re-trained at least every five years.
May a BAT or Collector continue to do testing and collections after their five-year training has expired?
No. The DOT regulations are clear that a BAT and a Collector must meet the requirement of completing training within the past five years in order to perform their roles.
Does the Department of Transportation (DOT) provide BAT and Collector training?
No. The DOT regulations spell out the training requirements, but the DOT does not provide BAT or Collector training.
What are AlcoPro’s qualifications to provide BAT and Collector training?
AlcoPro has been providing alcohol testing training services for approximately 20 years – before the time of “BAT” training. AlcoPro started conducting BAT training in 1994 when the DOT alcohol testing regulations were first effective. AlcoPro has conducted Collector training since 2001, when the DOT revised Part 40 regulations that required all collectors to be trained. Our BAT Instructors have completed the Intoximeter BAT Instructor Course and are certified as Intoximeter Factory Instructors. Our Collector Instructors have completed Collector Instructor training and are well versed in the intricacies of the DOT regulations. AlcoPro’s Training Director does training full-time, and is expert on content and adult learning methodology.
What breath alcohol testing instruments does AlcoPro train on?
We train on all Intoximeters instruments, including the Alco-Sensor IV / RBT IV, Alco-Sensor IV with Memory, Alco-Sensor IV @ Work, Alcomonitor CC, and Intox EC/IR. We can also provide training on instruments from other manufacturers, such as Intoxilyzer, Drager, and LifeLoc.
How long is the BAT Class?
Our BAT classes are one full day with the use of self-study materials that students complete prior to class.
Where are the classes held?
Our Knoxville, TN classes are held at our facility at 2547 Sutherland Avenue. We schedule several regional classes annually, primarily in Michigan and Ohio. We frequently travel to our customers’ location to conduct on-site training. Please consult our training schedule for specific class locations or call 800 227-9890 to request a quotation for on-site training.
Do I need to bring my own breath alcohol testing instrument to training?
It is not necessary to bring your own instrument to class, as we provide instruments to use during training. However, if it is convenient to bring your instrument to class it allows our instructor to ensure your instrument is working correctly and for you to practice on your own instrument.
Can I self-certify as a BAT by completing a BAT Self-Study Course?
BAT Self-Study courses satisfy the requirement to be proficient on the DOT rules and regulations, which is only one half of the training requirement to be certified as a BAT. A student must also be trained to proficiency on a specific breath alcohol testing device, and must demonstrate a minimum of seven error-free practice tests in the presence of a qualified individual in order to be certified as a BAT.
Can a person certified as a BAT perform a calibration adjustment on an alcohol testing instrument?
DOT regulations allow BATs to perform Accuracy Checks if they are trained to do so, but the regulations require additional certification as Calibration Technician in order to calibrate an alcohol testing instrument. AlcoPro can train and certify students as a Calibration Technician for all Intoximeter instruments.
What is the difference between an Accuracy Check, External Calibration Check, and Calibration?
More students are confused about this terminology than any other topic. Because we train every student to perform accuracy checks we devote considerable time to this topic in our BAT classes. We hope that if you have recently completed one of BAT training classes you know the answer to this question. If not, we hope to see you in one of our classes soon.
